Character Information
Name: Kainé.
Canon: Nier (gestalt).
Canon Point: Ending C.
Age: 20.
History:
Kainé on the Nier wiki.
Personality:
In a game of twists and turns, Kainé’s status seems to be a constant. It’s truly amazing how many times she can be called some variant of “foul-mouthed hussy”. Her brash manner comes as a relief in world torn up by sorrow...at least until the second run through the game and you get to see just where that came from. It kicks off with a bang as a rock hits a young girl -- less than ten, though by how much is anyone’s guess -- in the head and she gets taunted by a group of boys that know who she is. She’s that one pretending to be a girl, cursed to be of both sexes, and bringing misfortune to their cliffside town. The next blow comes in the form of her privately agreeing with them, giving in to the abuse and wishing for death.
Kainé has become more and more secretive over the years as she's experienced hurt after hurt, so she winds up distancing herself from humanity both physically and psychologically. She welcomed Tyrann and the bloodlust that helped fuel her because it made her feel more comfortable in her perceived -- and then real -- inhumanity, like there was a solid reason for her to be rejected by everyone besides the body she was born with. The fact that she was so lonely and he filled a void in her was twisted, but it definitely helped her survive. Even before his timely arrival, Kainé was never able to feel welcomed by others she came across, and even as a little girl, she was suicidal over the amount of harassment she received in her hometown. The fact that she still didn’t want to see the Aerie completely destroyed after everything done to her only messed with her head more. She could call it a shithole all she wanted, but she couldn't deny that that was where she was born and spent years of her life. Just another way she was a smear that needed to be wiped from the planet, of course.
She never abandoned this feeling, but there were those that made it easier to deal with along the way. An old woman took her in as her granddaughter and taught her to emphasize her feminine traits without guilt while showing her that women could still be strong and crass -- Kali could do it without fear of being “masculine”, so why not her? Anyone who said otherwise deserved to be put in their place. Kainé lived for her, and when she was murdered, she lived to avenge her. Even knowing that her grandma wouldn't want her to give up, it was hard for Kainé to consider life without her and without a goal, which is why when Nier comes along and offers her friendship and a new mission, she takes it up with confusion -- but also fierce loyalty. He gave her a new reason to live.
Being with Nier and seeing him give his all for his daughter lets Kainé feel comfortable giving in to her softer side, even if she’s still not likely to show it. That doesn't start to happen more until she’s confronted with Emil, a small boy that similarly hates his existence and she sees herself in. Not wanting his life to go to waste like she perceives hers to have been, she starts to build him up. She wants him to see his value, and in doing so she slowly starts to recognize her own. Kainé still wrestles with seeing herself as someone who can only bring destruction, just turning herself into a weapon for someone else’s use rather than for her own revenge, but there start to be more and more hints to her gentle side as she relaxes around the group. She comforts others, she shares stories, and her bitter remarks that she used to isolate herself are sometimes swapped out for a more honest vulnerability.
Tyrann takes this softness, taunting her and warning her with his original promise -- if she ever stopped living on her hatred, he would consume her and she would die like she was meant to -- right until the very end, where he realizes with horror that in the same way her closeness with Emil made her content with her existence and gave her a purpose, he was happy just getting to live at her side. Kainé explains that they're the same. Even her immediate identifiers -- a crude woman in lingerie -- is a shield built up as a “screw you” to the world and everyone in it. She clings to the language and over-sexualized clothes because it goes along with the image of a hardass that gives no fucks, a woman comfortable in her skin, and someone with no need for pretty, polite words, when the reality is that she’s still hiding from that abused little girl that questions and hates herself that she started as. Kainé calls their hatred a crutch that they use, and this understanding further eases her suffering right along the way to the end, where she gives in completely to the feelings of love she had developed again and is consequently destroyed. Her demise is remarked upon as a gift, and her last words are of thanks. SHE WAS STILL THAT LITTLE GIRL, HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT? WHAT A FUN GAME, GUYS!!!
Abilities:
Used to be able to use magical attacks and regenerate her body, but as that was due to someone else’s (Tyrann’s) aid, she's now without that ability. However, she has retained much of her strength and techniques from her body learning to fight over the years. She's skilled with martial arts and using twin sawtooth cleavers.
Her supremely mundane skill is that she's good at tongue twisters, though she starts adding in curse words the more she repeats it.
Strengths:
+ Resilient.
+ Passionate.
+ Secretly a sweetheart.
+ Determined.
+ Loyal.
Weaknesses:
- Crass.
- Chronically suicidal.
- Prone to violence.
- Lonely loner.
- Weak self-esteem.
God/Shinki: Shinki.
Why?: She’s a party member in canon and used to being a partner to a chosen, trusted person. She offers herself as a weapon to said trusted person. She also just...wouldn't do well as a god.
Cause Of Death: Body broke down into a Shade, then was stabbed.
Vessel: Twin sawtooth cleavers.
Name Location: Middle of chest.
Power:
Can cause numbing/that annoying tingly sensation of limbs falling asleep.
